In general use you will leave this box unchecked, but it may be helpful to separate unrelated content on a page. The "Detect Separate Items" box can be used to scan each outlined part of the preview page separately. Press Cancel or close the Scan window when you have finished. This new scan will be added to your document. To continue scanning, change the page in the scanner, and click "Scan" once again. Once scanned, a new document will open in Kofax Power PDF for Mac's page view containing the scanned page. Once you've selected your settings, click "Scan" to scan your document. Some setting recommendations are highlighted below. Keeping scans small enough to meet all your needs is key to document performance. The larger the document, the more unwieldy and longer it takes to process. The usefulness and ease of working with scanned content depends a lot on the quality of the scan, and also on the bulk of the scanned material in terms of document size. The application also supports scanning with Continuity Camera (requires macOS 10.14 and iOS iOS 12 or higher). There's nothing in their support page that explicitly says the scanner is compatible with Apple Silicon Macs, but like I said, that's really irrelevant. The MBA didn't recognize the scanner at first, so I went to Canon's support page for this scanner found drivers for it that were updated late last year and installed them. I've never tried to use it with my M1 MacBook Air, but for the sake of this conversation, I gave it a whirl. I have a Canon flatbed scanner that I bought a few years ago and is used with my 2019 iMac. Quite a lot of scanners work straight out of the box just fine, no additional drivers needed, but not universally so. Obviously look for one that is compatible with Big Sur. The architecture isn't really relevant, but rather the OS support. I wouldn't be concerned about whether or not they specifically say they are compatible with the M1 platform.
